MY WESTFIELD BUILD

Stage 5

The Single vehicle Approval test........... First I thought it might be a good idea to put it through an M.O.T. to check brakes, lights and emissions etc.(found a slight fuel leak but everything else was O.K.) Now, check this out ,the cars never been on the road and I've got to drive it 55 miles to Shrewsbury (hope it does'nt break down).

"Well I made it"(after a very enjoyable drive too)the weather was kind to us which was a good job as we had'nt got a roof on yet , apparently it won't pass with all the press studs sticking out! Arrived early so I had a nervous wait !

Here we go !! Feeling very small next to all these dirty great lorries.

Tester (Mark)starts his "very thorough checks".........

........Rose joints need tightening (must have vibrated loose on way over , I've been told this is quite common after the first journey they have'nt worked loose since!).

Weights and measures department ,had to adjust the carb a touch to meet the emissions requirements . they also check and record the individual axle weights.

Very stringent brake check, "you have to strap a pressure gauge to your foot to do this, more than a bit fiddly in the close confines of the westfield footwell".

Headlamp alignment test (had to adjust one!)

Three and a half hours later..... Success!!! I have a ministers approval certificate.

Now all I had to do is take the ministers approval certificate to the local vehicle registration office and have the car inspected and I can be allocated a number plate.I took every receipt and bill I had and I was given a "B" reg . Same age as the engine!

I then decided to do a bit of cosmetic work on the engine,I removed the rocker covers and repainted them to match the rest of the car....

Also I managed to get a piece of ally plate which I made into an air cleaner top to complement the rocker covers.

On the road at last!!! On top of Clee hill.

.........And on another trip...... Around the dams at Rhayader in Wales. Good run this , lots of lovely scenery with a V8 backing track what more could one ask for?

.........As you can see I am enjoying my little car , I'm enjoying the performance of it too ("lets just say I'm more than satisfied with it, it goes like a bat on steroids!!!!!!") Well there you have it , I hope you enjoyed the build up of my little kit car, and to anyone thinking of building your own kit car, I say go for it , you won't be disappointed, I know I'm not!!

Happy and safe motoring everyone

John Peplow.
